Good Food for Students from Slow Food: Full Story

Students are invited to make a difference to food locally and set up a Slow Food on Campus group. Slow Food on Campus Youth Coordinator Ria Jackson explains: “There’s a long-standing myth that students today are carefree. We disagree. Many are exploring better, healthier ways of living while on a budget. Some have had gap years abroad and understand the impact food has within a global context. Slow Food on Campus offers good food and good times.”

Slow Food on Campus has developed a series of easy to follow guides to help establish new groups so that students – who are future food ambassadors – can celebrate what’s on their plate and create an on-campus food revolution.

Through speaking with staff, caterers and their peer group within educational institutions, students can reap the benefits of high quality, sustainable, fair and above all, enjoyable food through improved food systems.

Activities include raising awareness of the Slow Food “good, clean, fair” ethos through events such as film screenings, talks and debates, or practical pursuits like growing edible campus gardens or hosting farmer’s markets. Students are encouraged to connect with their community, from participating in community gardens to meeting local producers, with support provided by the network of Slow Food local groups, of which there are over 50 across the UK.

This new academic year, Slow Food on Campus will be launching at Leeds Metropolitan University, Oxford Brookes University, the University of Plymouth and the University of Winchester.

Slow Food on Campus is free of charge to join for students. Join your local Slow Food group today and be part of this delicious worldwide movement! Find out more at info@slowfood.org.uk
