The Student Radio Association is proud to announce that the Chair of the Student Radio Awards 2011-2013 is none other than DJing legend Mary Anne Hobbs.

Mary Anne Hobbs was announced as the incoming Chair of the Student Radio Awards at the National Student Radio Conference, hosted by Crush Radio at University of Hertfordshire.

Huw Stephens, outgoing Chair 2008-2011, produced a short video message for the delegation, in which he declared his sadness for leaving the role, but his excitement and admiration for the woman filling his shoes.

In a statement read out by Huw, Mary Anne Hobbs said: “I’m delighted and deeply honoured to have been invited to Chair the Student Radio Awards. I’ve spent the last year mentoring 400 students involved with Forge Radio at Sheffield University Students’ Union, and this has given me a unique insight and a real passion for student radio.”

Hobbs returns to Xfm in the summer after departing from BBC Radio 1 in September last year, further cementing the Student Radio Association’s relationship with top broadcasting organisations in the UK.

David Walker, the Chair of the Student Radio Association said: “Having someone as talented as Mary Anne Hobbs supporting student radio and getting involved in the Student Radio Awards shows just how passionate the industry is about student radio. We are delighted and excited to have Mary Anne involved – and a little bit in awe! But we’re certain she will do a fantastic job.”

He continued: “The Student Radio Association would like to send a wholehearted thank you to Huw Stephens for his role as Chair of the Awards since 2008. He’s been absolutely briliant – approachable, friendly, supportive and up for anything. The Awards wouldn’t be what they are today without him!”

The Awards ceremony will be taking place at the IndigO2, London, on the 9th November 2011.
