We wanted to introduce you to your new team of Regional Officers for 2012/13, so why not get to know your representative and get in touch.

South West & South Wales Regional Officer
Name – Richard Queree
Bio – I’m the Station Manager at Tequila Radio which is based at the ATRiuM Campus of the University of Glamorgan in Cardiff. After only recently getting heavily involved in management, I’ve found that there can be quite a number of pitfalls and difficulties in running a student radio station. Licensing, funding, gathering music, dealing with an SU – it can all be difficult at times. From what I’ve experienced so far with the Student Radio Association (such as going to the Student Radio Conference) I find it a really valuable resource. I’ve learnt about things I didn’t even know existed. I decided to apply for the Regional Officer position in the South West and South Wales because I wanted to add to that resource and help stations take off and thrive. I want to give students involved in this thing we call student radio the best chance to gain skills, have fun and maybe even get a job in the industry. I can bring to the party my experience in Student, Community and Internet Radio which spans nine years. I’ve also built radio stations before completely from scratch so I’ve got a lot of technical experience too. I’m really looking forward to this year and meeting all the talented people in the area.

North East and Yorkshire Regional Officer
Name: John Scott
Bio – I’m currently a part of 107 Spark FM which is based at the University of Sunderland. I’m immensely grateful to both my station and the Student Radio Association for the amazing opportunities which have got me where I am today. Having graduated last year I wanted to make sure my skills and experience gained we’re put to good use – and what better way than to offer my knowledge and advice to other student radio stations. I’m unbelievably excited about the year ahead, and can’t wait to work with all the stations in my region… Who says it’s all grim up north?

North West, North Wales & Northern Ireland Regional Officer
Name: Sam van Geffen
Bio – 23 year old in my final year of a Communication BA Hons at the University of Liverpool. I (@GeffenSam) split my time between that and LSRadio – Liverpool Student Radio – I established at UoL (@LSRadioUK). Im also a Student Trustee for the Union and have recently been elected North West, Wales and NI Regional Officer for the Student Radio Association (@SRA). This year I won the ‘I Love Student Radio’ Award for ‘Station Manager of the Year′. Lately, I’ve found it hard to have a conversation without a good bedding track. London & East Anglia Regional Officer
Name: Marie Turner
Bio – I’m from Blast Radio at the University of West London where I have been for 3 years presenting and producing. Before that I have been involved with Scout Radio since I was 17, traveling the country every summer setting up a Radio Station in a field for 20,000 Scouts and Guides listening. I have been in radio since I was born after my parents both worked for the Marconi Company in Chelmsford. I wanted to be the Regional Officer for London & East Anglia because I am absolutely passionate about student radio. I think it is the future of our industry and I have met so many unbelievably talented people just in the last three years at every Student Radio Station, be it well-known or newly set up, which is why I think it is imperative to include as many of you as possible in everything. I like to think I’m really approachable, so if any of you have a problem, I am just at the end of an email! Here’s to an exciting year in London & East Anglia!

South East Regional Officer
Name: Mel Lewis
Bio – I am based at CSR FM in Canterbury, but I am Radio Sonar alumni and born and bred in Guildford, so have a good knowledge of the region I’m now representing at national level. This year, I hope to really push the creativity in our region, opening up joint broadcast opportunities, sharing best practice and enhancing the experience for volunteers at every station. I personally have experience in the BBC (BBC Surrey & Sussex Sport and Early Breakfast producer) as well as my one-off show on Radio 1 after winning Best Female Presenter at the Student Radio Awards in 2010. I’ve spent five years in student and community radio, done various work experience positions at Global and now present on internet station DIY. My plan is to assist stations with development, working with their unions and members to enhance experience, opportunities and any necessary systems and structures. I want to help make the SRA useful to every individual involved in student radio.

Midlands Regional Officer
Name: Jamie Taylor
Bio – I’m currently the Assistant Station Manager at LUSH Radio, University of Leicester, and I’m pretty awesome. At least, that’s what my mum tells me. My special skills are writing (un)funny bios, Chemistry (I have a degree and everything), DJing (Mostly Electro/DnB/Dubstep) and all that Radio Broadcast Technology stuff you all love. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher and sleep in the school like all teachers actually do.
I wanted to be your Midlands Regional Officer because I love student radio. Like, really love it. Like, if student radio were a person, I’d take it out to dinner, walk it home (after offering it my jacket because, hey, it’s cold outside), and leave it with a gentle kiss on it’s doorstep and a call the very next day, whilst totally respecting it’s boundaries, and making it feel truly special. Being your midlands regional officer is kind of like moving in with Student Radio, and having a totally awesome home life. And who wouldn’t want to do that?
I occasionally tweet stuff (@popidge), and even have a website where I sporadically write things and post pictures of myself in various fly situations (popidge.co.uk). I’m also a delight to talk to, so please feel free to hit me up via email – jamie.taylor@studentradio.org.uk
