Livewire
On the weekend of March 12th, Livewire at the University of East Anglia held our annual charity Jailbreak in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Small teams of students have 48 hours to get as far away from UEA campus as possible, using absolutely no money. They broadcast live for the full 48 hours, holding an outside broadcast in the square on the Friday, and then moving to the library until the Sunday.

This year, Livewire had additional fundraisers to the actual Jailbreak-ing – members of the station took part in a ten hour dance-athon; Jail-lake, in which Station Manager Issy ran ten miles around the UEA lake; and Jail-Drake, in which Livewire member Adrian was strapped to a chair and made to listen to Hotline Bling for an hour on repeat.

Livewire also secured an interview with Brit-nominated band Wolf Alice in the square on Friday, who then went on to help wax a member’s chest in a bid to raise money.

A student radio fundraiser wouldn’t be complete without a charity single to raise awareness – and this one is a mash-up of ‘breaking free’ songs featuring Livewire’s members.
This year’s winners managed to get to Toronto, Canada, 3576 miles away from campus, with teams also arriving in Greece, Italy, Barcelona and John O’Groats.

They’ve currently raised nearly £8000 and counting, and will have a final total as soon as all the money from the team’s buckets has been counted.
