Welcome to another Playlist Meeting SRA Music Peeps!

One of the hardest things for Music Teams amongst our members to do is perfect the sound of Student Radio. Ultimately there is no right or wrong answer to what you playlist on your station as tastes vary but if you’re needing some inspiration or advice then our Music Officer is here to help.

If you’re looking at our playlist and you’re unsure about some of the tracks, fear not, there’s lengthy reading to follow. Here is a little bit about why we’re valuing each record on our playlist. We also have a super neat Spotify now with our playlist that you can press play on below!

A-List
Ariana Grande – Into You
Mammoth pop hit from Lady Grande, which is currently making moves on the UK Shazam Charts. The high energy really works well for your big Summer bangers you need in your playlist at the moment.

Bastille – Good Grief
Moving up our playlist is Good Grief from Bastille, a song I think relates to a large spectrum of ages. The track currently sits in the Top 15 of the Shazam UK charts and is a mainstay across most of British radio.

Biffy Clyro – Animal Style
Biffy’s brutal number from new album Ellipsis still sits here due to increased interest in the band, through the album release. They still have huge shows across the UK coming up too so keep your playlist Biffin!

Calum Scott – Dancing On My Own
Straight additions to A-lists scare me, they seem unnatural. That being said, Calum Scott’s rise in the past two weeks has been unnatural to say the least. He sits Number 2 on the Shazam charts and Top 10 on Spotify’s chart with Radio 1 deciding to playlist this week too. This might just be the hottest record in the UK at the moment.

Chase & Status ft George The Poet – Spoken Word
Amidst becoming heavyweights on the festival scene, Chase & Status are setting the world alight at the moment and their new single is at the forefront of that. The track is also supported at the moment by Radio 1 and sits in Shazam’s Top 50.

Cheat Codes x Kris Kross Amsterdam – Sex
I still believe this is your premium dance song in your playlist right now. It’s still going strong on Shazam and Spotify, charting in both. Commercial radio is also all over it.

Chvrches & Hayley Williams – Bury It
A recently released music video has given this song further life-span, because everybody likes animated superhero bands. The song itself is still going strong on Radio 1 and Spotify.

Drake – Too Good
Wowzers, we’ve actually lost One Dance! I believe its finally time to remove it from your playlists and immediately give a large chunk of its plays to new single Too Good which is doing just as well on various charts and playlists at the moment.

gnash – I hate you, I love you
People are still finding and falling for this number so I believe it still has some life in it. Its currently number 25 worldwide on Spotify and Top 20 on Shazam.

Jonas Blue ft JP Cooper – Perfect Strangers
Amazing uplift for this record in the past few weeks as its gone Number 3 in the UK on Shazam, meaning it’s being played, heard and more importantly liked all over the country. Keep it firmly in your A-list.

Kent Jones – Don’t Mind
This record has been released at the perfect time, becoming a Summer smash. Worldwide it’s number 4 on Shazam with it being Top 20 worldwide on Spotify also.

Kungs v Cookin’ on 3 Burners – This Girl
Shazam’s pride and joy at Number 1, still going so strong in the UK. Keep it!

Rihanna – Sledgehammer
Okay so I know this one maybe lacks some of the stats the others have but honestly for playlist variety, think back on when the last time you fired in a proper grand pop ballad was. Most likely you’re looking at Adele’s ‘Hello’. That was released back in October last year. Support this year’s first actual ballad!

Selena Gomez – Kill Em With Kindness
Another big pop record quickly on the rise belongs to Miss Gomez. Her new single is charting well on Shazam and Spotify and works well as a pop/dance hybrid for your genre quotas.

Sundara Karma – Loveblood
Whilst some stations have ended their run with this record now, I still believe it has some life left in it. Sundara Karma have had a huge month playing almost every festival you can think of, so they’re gaining lots of new fans along the way. For student radio at the moment, there are few bands who rival their importance.

B List
Blossoms – Charlemagne
One of the UK’s most exciting new bands release their debut album on Aug 5th and new single Charlemagne leads that campaign. They have lots of support from the BBC after placing in their Sound of 2016 and lots of UK music publications are behind them too.

Bob Marley – Is This Love (LVNDSCAPE & Boiler Remix)
Incorporating Dancehall and Reggae, two of the biggest sounds of the UK at the moment, the team behind this release should be hailed as geniuses. Of course Bob Marley’s going to do well in this day and age. The track is currently in the Spotify UK chart and also Top 25 on the UK Shazam chart.

Bring Me The Horizon – Avalanche
There aren’t many better records for your station’s rock quota at the moment than BMTH and their new single. The video has been out for just over a month but that’s not stopped it impacting sometime early next month. With a catchy chorus, this one still has some kick in it.

Christine & The Queens – Tilted
I live in a fairly humdrum town and my local supermarket has sold out of Christine & The Queens new album. This is most likely due to the much talked about Graham Norton performance. This record is in demand so make sure you are playlisting it.

Fifth Harmony/Fetty Wap – All In My Head(Flex)
Still going strong, charting on both Shazam and Spotify as well as being a hit across UK Commercial radio.

Major Lazer ft Justin Bieber & MO – Cold Water
Remember that thing I said about playlisting a song straight into an A-list? Well Radio 1 did that this past week with this new record, on day of delivery no less. This is going to be a global hit through the power of the artists involved, and it’s bloody good too. Make sure you’re playing it.

MO – Final Song
Left-field pop doing rather well in the UK at the moment. Support from Radio 1 has seen it chart on Shazam and Spotify too.

Spring King – The Summer
Another band loved universally by Student Radio, Spring King’s new single does what it says on the tin. It creates wonderful pacey indie for the Summertime.

Tinie Tempah & Wizkid – Mamacita
Tinie is a man who can’t make a failing single. Everything he touches is gold and with Dancehall being THE sound of 2016, of course he had his go at it, bringing in the UK’s biggest star Wizkid. The result is a hit in the making.

TwentyOne Pilots – Heathens
Despite being enormous on the Worldwide Shazam and Spotify charts, Ride is gone. Heathens has taken over in the UK, climbing in the charts quickly. Suicide Squad is out in two weeks and the build up to that is going to be very effective for this record.

Two Door Cinema Club – Are We Ready? (Wreck)
The indie legends’ return is proving to be quite a popular hit and so it moves up our playlist this week. Still has some life left in it.

Wolf Alice – Lisbon
Still hanging in there is the crunching anthem from Wolf Alice. They are one of the UK’s biggest bands and one of student radio’s proudest achievements, so root for them as much as possible with this record.

C List
5 Seconds of Summer – Girls Talk Boys
This song was originally just a track for the Ghostbusters OST but due to 5SOS’s insane fandom (which I am totally part of), the song has went on to trend and chart all over. We’re putting it in our C-list for now but move it up quickly as it’s likely to be in and out within a month.

Clean Cut Kid – We Used To Be In Love
27 festivals this year. Blimey. Clean Cut Kid are on a roll and this record feels like the one to put them in front of a massive audience. Student radio needs to play its part in helping such a good band succeed to spread the word and play the song!

Dizzee Rascal & Calvin Harris – Hype
Big new release from two heavyweights which is still in its early days. Its already on charts but you’ll see it fire up those charts in the coming weeks. Jump on the hype now.

James Bay – Craving
We have new music from one of Britain’s most beloved songwriters and it’s doing rather well. It has support from left-field commercial radio as well as Radio 1. A live lounge last week will have helped too.

Jax Jones ft Mike Dunn & MNEK – House Work
This number seems to be the upcoming house record in the UK at the moment. Its currently sitting around the Top 30 in the UK on Shazam despite being released only a few weeks back. Keep tabs here, this could be an enormous hit.

Katy Perry – Rise
We have two reasons to add this song to your playlist. Number one is that it represents the Olympics which are just around the corner. The other is that it is Katy Perry. Easy.

Snakehips ft Zayn – Cruel
Next is an incredible new single from Snakehips who now features commonly on UK Commercial radio. Zayn joins him which no doubt brings in a large audience too. Already on Shazam’s charts too.

Twin Atlantic – No Sleep
We have a new album campaign in the Twin Atlantic camp and a great new single to support it. Already on Radio 1’s playlist, No Sleep is perfect for student radio playlists.

Vant – Karma Seeker
One of our New Music tips from last time has been playlisted now by Radio 1. Karma Seeker looks officially the record from Vant to bring them onto the bigger stage so get repping it!

Years & Years – Worship
This record already has lots of good radio play but it still very new so is a great addition to your playlist. The band are obviously super popular too so its going to be a successful single.

New Music
Declan McKenna – Bethlehem
We’re still loving this record from one of Sony’s brightest stars. Brazil was a great song for Radio 1’s specialist output and Bethlehem is even better. A perfect song for student radio.

Francis & The Lights ft Bon Iver – Friends
The viral hit from Francis & The Lights is now on the main Spotify chart. People are really digging this record so its about time UK radio makes the plunge on it. As great tastemakers, student radio should lead by example.

Jamie T – Tinfoil Boy
Jamie’s Summer release is a proper banger. It’s impact date is end of this month so we’re not sure it’s going to do much else but it still has a week or two left in your rotations.

Lapsley – Operator (DJ Koze Radio Remix)
We think we’re onto something big here. When we tipped this song last time, it was purely from hearing it on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show. Now the song is being serviced to radio with an edit, is on Spotify with an edit and has a YouTube upload with an edit. If there isn’t a single campaign coming we’d be surprised. Still a strong candidate for Song of the Summer.

Lee Walker vs DJ Deeon ft Katy B & MNEK – Freak Like Me
Pretty much everything Katy B jumps on is worth playlisting and this is no different. This has viral hit all over it as it’ll work perfectly in clubs over the Summer nights. Its also around the Top 40 on Shazam so be ready for it blowing up.

Lil Wayne, Imagine Dragons, Wiz Khalifa ft Logic, Ty Dolla $ign & X Ambassadors – Sucker For Pain
I just wrote all of those artists without having to google it, I’m proud of myself. Seriously thought with Suicide Squad out in a few weeks, this record is going to be getting a lot of attention. Plus its super rare you can get a rap song that sounds nice on radio, so cherish it.
