Hello and welcome along Student Radio music teams to another SRA Playlist Meeting!

One of the hardest things for Music Teams amongst our members to do is perfect the sound of Student Radio. Ultimately there is no right or wrong answer to what you playlist on your station as tastes vary but if you’re needing some inspiration or advice then our Music Officer is here to help.

Or if you want to just have a chat about music, you can email him at: scott.hastie@studentradio.org.uk

If you’re looking at our playlist and you’re unsure about some of the tracks, fear not, there’s lengthy reading to follow. Here is a little bit about why we’re valuing each record on our playlist. We also have a super neat Spotify now with our playlist that you can press play on below!

A List
5 Seconds of Summer – Girls Talk Boys
The 5SOS army are making sure that the band’s record for the Ghostbusters film is still doing the rounds. Radio stations are loving it as are streaming platforms so keep it in your playlist for now.

Ariana Grande – Into You
SRA’s Dom Stirling’s fav Ari has really made one of the hits of the Summer. We haven’t even thought about nudging this one out of our A-list yet as its still on the radio all over the place, being one of the best sounds of Summer ’16.

Bastille – Good Grief
Another one still working its magic is this sleeper record of the Summer from Bastille. You can still hear it on practically every national station in the UK. Makes me kind of giddy to see how they follow it up!

Blossoms – Charlemagne
The Stockport band released their debut album two weeks ago and with it, there is currently a huge push on this record. It helps that it’s a proper banger too.

Calum Scott – Dancing On My Own
The Robyn cover is currently sitting atop the UK’s Shazam charts and is for sure amongst the top played records on British radio this month. Keep it for another few weeks.

Christine & The Queens – Tilted
One of my favourite records we’re supporting and gladly the support for it is growing at pace. The song is second on the Shazam charts and also sits in Radio 1’s A-list currently.

Drake/Rihanna – Too Good
As you will know, anything Drizzy touches is Gold. Too Good will be an A-list record for a while yet, probably until he decides to release his next single (which should absolutely be Controlla).

Fifth Harmony/Fetty Wap – All In My Head (Flex)
We’ve moved this up for one final push before it has its day. It’s run has mostly ended but it’s still one of the best pop records we’ve had this Summer and the sunshine itself still has some time in it, so this will soundtrack it well.

Jonas Blue ft JP Cooper – Perfect Strangers
Another record that’s pretty much done but is still surviving well somehow. It’ll go down as one of the biggest hits of the year for sure so whilst Radio 1 and Global continue to support, we should too. If you need room in your playlist though, this might be the one to go first.

Katy Perry – Rise
With the Olympics in full swing, and it being all people are talking about, it makes sense to move up K-Pez’ official theme. It’s not a particularly strong record though so once Rio has buzzed down, remove it from your playlist.

Kent Jones – Don’t Mind
The premium R&B hit of the Summer crown definitely belongs to Kent Jones. This record should still be one of your playlist’s biggest hitters and it’ll probably see life until our next update too.

Kungs v Cookin’ On 3 Burners – This Girl
Exactly what I just said about Kent Jones but in the Dance world. Still a strong record to fall back as an A-list on your playlist, and its still trending well so keep it for sure.

Major Lazer ft Justin Bieber & Mo – Cold Water
This is turning out to be a huge hit for Major Lazer with it Number 1 on the Global Spotify Chart. You’ll definitely want the top streamed song in the world in your A-list!

The Chainsmokers – Don’t Let Me Down/Closer
Remember when everybody thought that these super talented producers would only see success with #Selfie?! The Chainsmokers have gone on to be one of 2016’s biggest hitmakers and right now they have two songs doing the rounds. British radio is still high on Don’t Let Me Down but its Closer you want to be paying attention to. It’s very high on streaming and shazam charts so we just need to wait on Radio pulling the trigger. Perhaps Student Radio should be the place to help launch it?

TwentyOne Pilots – Heathens
One saving grace from the mess that was Suicide Squad was this amazing record from one of the world’s biggest bands. It’s the best song for your alternative rock quota out at the moment.

B List
Bob Marley – Is This Love (LVNDSCAPE & Boiler remix)
Track of the day recently on Radio 1 off the back of 20m Spotify streams worldwide. Global and Bauer are also supporting makes this an essential playlist track for your station.

Clean Cut Kid – We Used To Be In Love
There are few bands achieving glowing reviews all about the country as much as Clean Cut Kid, and they’ve played at almost every festival going on this Summer. Their music absolutely backs it up and this gem is one of the best indie pop records of the year so join the support!

Izzy Bizu – White Tiger
An extraordinary voice with a big future is Izzy Bizu whose song White Tiger you will recognize from a TV ad. A resurgence for the tune has earned it a spot on Radio 1’s B-List and good showings on Shazam and Spotify too.

James Bay – Craving
Everybody loves this lad and this song has made the playlist at Virgin Radio. Might be nearing the end of its run but it’s a top song so we recommend keeping it around for a little bit more.

Jax Jones – House Work
One of the top trending dance records at the moment is House Work which is in the UK Shazam Chart also. One of the catchiest deep house records in a long while.

Lapsley – Operator (DJ Koze Remix)
We told you didn’t we! This was always too good not to get an official release and now it’s set for a Sep release so for the month of August just get proper Disco for us please. Student Radio was on this first, just saying…*Mic Drop*

Snakehips ft Zayn – Cruel
A song working its way up our playlist is new from Snakehips who have been working on a big song for a mainstream breakthrough for a while now. Roping in Zayn to make his best post 1D work is precisely the right move then. Get on this!

Spring King –The Summer
Despite this record having had its time, we’re still supporting due to the band being one of Student Radio’s favourite stories of 2016. Their album is immense and they’ve had a very busy Summer, playling all across Europe.

The 1975 – Somebody Else
Off the back of the Mercury music prize nod, how could we not support The 1975’s new album. They genuinely have a great chance to pick up the prize too. The band’s popularity speaks for itself so just get this one onto your playlist asap!

Tinie Tempah ft Wizkid – Mamacita
Still going strong on Urban contemporary radio in the UK and one of Dancehall’s biggest success stories this year. It’s a really different sound for your playlist so we recommend keeping it about for a little bit more.

Twin Atlantic – No Sleep
A rock n roll gut punch from one of the easiest rock bands to playlist for radio. Its approaching the end of its run but still has a few breaths in it. Excited for the follow-up.

Years & Years – Worship
After a mammoth 2015, one of the UK’s best new pop groups are still subtley ruling the airwaves by making earworms like Worship. Lovely deep, dark tune for your playlist.

C List
Biffy Clyro – Howl
Credit to Biffy’s team, the release schedule of The Wolves of Winter into Animal Style into Howl has been seemless. They’ve felt like a band whose songs have demanded airplay since the very first play of Wolves. This is another stunner of a record.

Cassius & Ryan Tedder – The Missing
A song playlisted on Radio 1 and Virgin and working its way onto streaming platforms too. Another fab Disco record and I’m all about those.

DNCE – Toothbruth
The other Jonas follows up Cake In The Ocean with another funky pop tune called Toothbrush which is currently doing nicely. Radio 1, Global and Bauer have all playlisted and is doing 50m+ streams on Spotify.

DJ Snake & Justin Bieber – Let Me Love You
The rate on which Bieber related songs become viral is insane. Upon DJ Snake’s album release last week, this song has shone through and gone straight to the Top 4 of Spotify’s charts. This one’s going to be all over Radio for the next few months.

Green Day – Bang Bang
Returns from legendary acts are always worth supporting and Green Day’s return is a big record. Could very easily be a huge radio record.

Jamie T – Power Over Men
Whilst we liked Tinfoil Boy, this one really seems like the proper comeback for one of Britain’s top songwriters. It’s Radio X’s song of the week and expect to hear it all over alt radio for the next month.

Kano – T-Shirt Weather In The Manor
I am super stoked for Kano’s mercury nod and whilst there have been plenty of songs from his new album which worked for playlisting, this one seems a perfect fit for Student Radio to support. It’s a mellow affair but is an important record, celebrating Kano’s success and Grime’s success.

Kanye West – Fade
Yeezy’s team has picked a good one to release from The Life of Pablo with danceheads potentially loving this too. It’s trending well, already into the Shazam charts so might be worth getting onto.

Lee Walker & DJ Deeon ft Katy B – Freak Like Me
We’ve moved this one up from our New Music list because it’s become a really awesome British radio hit. It works well for the weather and as I’ve said before, anything Katy B sings on is worth our while.

Tove Lo – Cool Girl
Radio is still to properly go all in on Tove Lo’s new song but Radio 1 did recently make it their song of the day. Thing is, Tove is an exceptional songwriter and this chorus will be with you for DAYS. So make sure this one starts to creep into your playlist.

New Music
Bon Iver – 22
Okay so maybe this one is a bit abstract for your main playlist but Bon Iver makes some of the most inspiring music in the world and anything new by him demands attention. This will work very well for your evening shows and dare I say it, I think its worth a few daytime plays as students love Bon Iver.

Desiigner – Timmy Turner
The follow up to Panda will not see as much mainstream success but it will be received just as well in the rap world.  It’s catchy enough for a playlist spot too and it’ll trend well on streaming and shazam.

Fickle Friends – Cry Baby
Ace song if you’re into synth pop that sounds like its out of a neon 80s flick. Perfect for a new music spotplay in your station.

Honeyblood – Ready For The Magic
With the football season back, one thing you can take advantage of is monitoring which songs are being played on adverts. Sky Sports have been using Honeyblood recently and the hook is going to be something people will love. Playlist it!

OneRepublic – Kids
We’re putting this one here just because there’s no room in our main lists yet, and it’s got a lot of life in it. This is OneRepublic’s best song since Catching Stars so be sure it’s going to top the charts in a month’s time.

Rag N Bone Man – Human
An exciting story is just beginning for Rag N Bone man whose song Human is going viral quickly entering the Spotify viral charts and Shazam at an alarming speed. Get on this now because he’s going to be a Student Radio mainstay over the coming year.
