It’s difficult to pin down just how to describe Squid’s unique sound. In an interview with NME, Squid described their sound as “Coronation Street theme tune played on flutes by angry children.” Their experimental and eclectic mix of post-punk, alternative, ambient funk is what sets them apart from the rest. We warmly welcome them to our SRA Class of 2020.
Formed in Brighton, this energetic five-piece are ripping up the rule book. Having played three sets at Glastonbury 2019 and earning a very respectable 115,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify, they are only on the rise. Their latest four track release, the EP ‘Town Centre’ will be the first EP on Dan Carey’s singles label Speedy Wunderground. ‘Town Centre’ features distinctive tracks such as ‘The Cleaner’; a seven-and-a-half-minute chaotic funk track with colourful melodies, catchy bass riffs, groovy percussion – cowbell included – and scowled, throaty vocals; which are reminiscent of the Talking Heads and The B-52’s. ‘Match Bet’, their latest single; includes melodic, lively guitar riffs, cowbell – of course – and vibrant brass to top it all off.
Squid have firmly got their foot in the music industries door and we’re excited to see what 2020 holds for them.
