The Student Radio Awards 2020 supported by BBC Sounds and Global are back and entries are now OPEN!

As ever things are always changing, so this year you will see a bunch of changes to the awards ceremony due to COVID-19 and keeping the awards current and modern but we promise it will still be the celebration you know and love.

You’ll have until 8:00pm on the 31st of August to get your entries in.

The Awards

This year, due to COVID-19, we’ve decided not to hold a physical awards ceremony in London. The SRA Events Team have made this decision in the interests of keeping students & wider industry safe, and to minimise disruption. However, this doesn’t mean it’ll be cancelled, as we’re looking forward to our first ever digital Student Radio Awards!

Watch at home in your PJs, with your station or wider region! We’re working hard to make sure you can still celebrate with the rest of the Student Radio community. That’s why we’re looking at small regional parties across the UK. This year there will be no need to travel to London as we’ll be bringing the awards to you! We’ll be announcing more information regarding regional parties once we know what will be possible within local council & government guidelines.

Submitting your entry for Awards 2020

We understand many students and student stations will be affected by the coronavirus restrictions & measures that have been in place. As many student stations have not been able to broadcast since March, this year 50% of award entry content can be audio from throughout your time at student radio. The other 50% of award entry content must have been broadcast within this academic year.

We will be using the same awards system as last year – and entries shall be submitted through the Student Radio Awards platform. Just a reminder that entries do not need to all be submitted at one time as these can be saved and updated at any time.

Categories

Every year the Executive committee work with our Judging Co-ordinators to see how we can ensure the awards can be of most benefit to students. This year we decided to look at the categories from 2019 and see where we can make changes to ensure that the Student Radio Awards 2020 are kept current, modern and inline with the world we are in today. These changes were voted on by the 2019/20 Executive Officer Team.

The new categories for 2020 are…

  • Best Music Show / Presenter
  • Best Producer
  • The Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Award

Let us break these down for you…

You’re probably wondering why we have removed the Best Male Presenter and Best Female Presenter awards? We have decided to replace these with one award which is the Best Music Show / PresenterThis new category will produce four main show / presenter awards, all with equal importance and fanfare. It also removes the distinction between single presenters and duos / multiple presenter shows, and categorises the entrants by format rather than gender.

Best Producer – Presenters, technicians, journalists etc are always celebrated at the awards for their hard work and now we want to shine a light on the producers who make the shows, research the content, and edit everything together. This category is designed to recognise an exceptional producer working in student radio.

And finally, The Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Award – this award is for anyone to enter. Whether you are an individual, a team, a show or a station initiating and leading actions to remove barriers, improve the student radio experience and engagement levels of others and create an environment where individuals feel a sense of belonging. We want this award to inspire and empower students to embrace diversity within their student stations.

Remember, a full list of award categories can be viewed here.

More information on the awards ceremony and nominations party will be released soon so keep your eyes on our social media, to make sure you don’t miss out give us a follow on Twitter or Instagram.
