The Radio Academy launches a brand new cross-industry awards, the Audio & Radio Industry Awards (ARIAS).
In association with Leeds Beckett University and LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District), the prestigious awards will take place at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Wednesday October 19th, with headline acts, to be revealed in the coming weeks, performing at the star-studded event.
Roger Cutsforth, The Radio Academy Managing Director commented: “The question of the awards has been a constant one to me from members and commentators alike and I am delighted that we can now confirm this brand new event to showcase and celebrate the very best across the whole of the UK’s vibrant radio and audio sector.
“Our partnership with Leeds Beckett University and LeedsBID is a perfect fit with The Radio Academy’s aim of inspiring the next generation of talent. The awards give the radio industry the opportunity to showcase the breadth and range of opportunities on offer in this exciting industry, ensuring we attract the brightest talent in future to work in radio.”
Deborah Green, Director of Marketing at Leeds Beckett University said: “This partnership gives our students an opportunity to gain valuable experience, offering them unprecedented access to work alongside industry professionals at the highest level. This is the sort of value-added experience we are able to offer our students, ensuring they stand-out in a crowded job market.”
The ARIAS will ensure the entire radio and audio industry – across all platforms and including podcasting, streaming and audio books – has the opportunity to celebrate the very best of audio, innovation and excellence.
The ceremony, which will seat guests theatre style, will be an inclusive event with tickets priced at just £36 [for Radio Academy members] to ensure the ARIAS are accessible to the whole radio industry from programming and production to marketing and commercial staff as well as journalists and senior management.
Joint Chair of the ARIAS will be Bob Shennan, Controller of BBC Radio 2 alongside Phil Riley, former Chair & CEO of Orion Media.
Phil Riley said: “I am delighted we have a brand new awards for the whole of the UK audio and radio sector. I know that there is nothing better than to be recognised for your work against colleagues from all corners and I am really looking forward to seeing the cream rise to the top amongst the entries at such a vibrant time for radio and audio in this country.”
There will be a total of 16 awards recognising innovation and excellence across all audio mediums, including Best Podcast; Best Digital and Audio Service (to include internet and streaming services); as well as more traditional awards such as Best Local Station; Best National Station; Best Sports Show and Best Network Music Breakfast Show.
A drinks reception and after show party will also be held at the First Direct Arena Leeds. The Radio Academy is currently in discussions with providers of accommodation and rail companies to offer concessions to Academy members.
Andrew Cooper, Chief Executive, LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District), said the announcement was headline news for the city. “Following on from Leeds hosting the MOBOs in November 2015, this is another high profile industry event coming to the city for the first time. LeedsBID has been working collaboratively with key business organisations to attract this prestigious ceremony to the city of Leeds.”
