About Shock Radio

Station History

Founded
1998

Undeterred by the closure of the joint station, a bunch of dedicated Salford students met up in The Old Pint Pot pub, where plans for a new station were put together, led by Dave Daly, a Salford undergraduate student. These early stages were mostly administrative, with suggestions for names being taken and ideas for where exactly to base the station. The committee – as they were known – eventually decided on the name Shock FM, and the station we know and love today was born.
Within it’s first week of becoming an official society, Shock FM’s popularity escalated. It became the second most-popular society in the Union, and received full support from the University’s media department. After some initial hurdles, the station eventually secured a dusty office in the Adelphi Building at the University; which was transformed into the Shock Radio studio that remains to this day.
After many short term broadcasts on FM through 28 day restricted licenses, Shock FM became Shock Radio and moved to broadcasting 24/7 over the internet, as we continue to do to this day. The station has continued to grow from strength to strength to place itself exactly where it finds itself today: as one of the most loved student stations in the country.
